About this event

Medicine’s purpose is often thought of as preventing or overcoming disease, illness or injury. But there is growing recognition that medical professionals have a role even when these outcomes may not be possible. In the 2021 Ewing Halsell Distinguished Lecture, physician-author Sunita Puri, MD, shares insights from her work in palliative care, pointing toward a broader definition of a “good outcome." She will also draw on her experiences as a writer and examine the ways that palliative medicine and writing shape and are shaped by each other. Her experiences vividly illustrate that sometimes the most profound way a physician can improve quality of life for a patient and their family involves something other than medical intervention.
